How to Choose the Right Mini Excavator for Your Job

Buying a mini excavator is one of the best investments a contractor, landscaper, or property owner can make — but only if you choose the right machine for your specific needs. In this guide, we break down every key factor to consider before you buy.

1. Weight Class & Size

Mini excavators typically range from 1 to 6 tons. The right size depends on your job site access, transport method, and the scale of work you'll be doing.

  • Under 2 tons — ideal for tight residential spaces, indoor demolition, and landscaping
  • 2–4 tons — the most versatile range, suitable for most contractor and farm applications
  • 4–6 tons — suited for larger excavation, utility work, and commercial projects
Pro Tip: If you plan to trailer your excavator, check the combined weight against your tow vehicle's rated capacity before purchasing.

2. Engine Type & EPA Certification

For US operators, EPA and CARB certification is non-negotiable. All Typhon excavators in our catalog run on Kubota diesel engines — widely regarded as the most reliable and fuel-efficient option in the compact equipment segment.

Look for Tier 4 Final compliance if you operate on commercial job sites, as some states and municipalities require it for equipment used in public spaces.

3. Dig Depth & Reach

Dig depth is one of the most important specs to match to your application. Most mini excavators offer between 5 and 14 feet of dig depth. Consider:

  • Utility line installation typically requires 4–6 ft dig depth
  • Pond or pool excavation may require 8–12 ft
  • Foundation work may require the full range of a larger machine
ⓘ Note: Always add 1–2 ft of buffer to your required dig depth to account for terrain variation and working angle.

4. Hydraulic Flow & Attachments

If you plan to use attachments like augers, hydraulic hammers, or grapples, check the machine's auxiliary hydraulic flow rating. Higher flow means more powerful and faster attachment operation. Most compact excavators in our lineup support standard quick-attach systems for easy swapping.

5. Tail Swing Configuration

Zero tail swing (ZTS) models keep the counterweight within the track width, making them ideal for work in tight spaces like urban lots or between structures. Conventional tail swing models offer slightly better stability but require more clearance.

Which Typhon Model Should You Choose?

Based on your needs, here's our quick recommendation guide:

  • Terror XVIII — Best for landscaping, residential work, and tight access
  • Terror XXV — Best for larger projects, farm use, and utility work
  • ACS XII — Best for entry-level buyers and lighter duty applications
